REDISCOVERY Filipino Artists Exhibition Launched in Hong Kong
01
April 2005
For three months, the
Philippine Consulate General in Hong Kong SAR will be the temporary
gallery for 29 paintings of Hong Kong-based Filipino artists.
Rediscovery, a three-month Filipino artists exhibition, was
launched yesterday at the Consulate to promote Filipino artists,
Philippine culture and arts in Hong Kong. The featured artists are Arnel
Agawin, Justo Roman Cascante III, Noel de Guzman, Joel Ferraris and
Francisco Segismundo.
“The Philippines gives recognition to Filipino artistic accomplishment as
significant to the development of a national cultural identity”, said
Consul General Corazon L. Belmonte-Jover during the opening reception
attended by members of the Consular Corps in Hong Kong, Hong Kong
government officials, Filipino businessmen and Filipino community leaders.
“The Consulate is, therefore, proud to be the temporary home for these
paintings and we are happy that we are able, even to a slight degree, to
support and promote our Filipino artists in Hong Kong”.
The artists exhibition will run until 30 June 2005.
De Guzman, speaking on behalf of the featured artists, thanked the
Consulate for its support in launching their group exhibition, calling it
a major achievement in promoting the works of Filipino artists in Hong
Kong. The five artists have had several one-man and group exhibits to
their credits, both in Hong Kong and in the Philippines.
De Guzman, originally from Manila, has been residing in HK for more than
10 years now. He is best known for painting with bare palms and fingers by
applying layers of acrylic paint directly on to canvases he lays on the
floor. De Guzman, who has a forthcoming one-man exhibition in Singapore in
May, believes that the sense of touch is a powerful and personal way of
experiencing painting, making it a more intimate experience.
Agawin, from Mandaluyong City, is a Hong Kong resident for the last 16
years. He is currently an independent creative services provider who has
worked for various advertising agencies in Manila and Hong Kong as an art
director, visualizer and design director.
Cascante, from Manila, is a Hong Kong resident for the last 13 years.
Aside from painting, his interests also include production of visual
effects for movies, including 3-D animation. He says he wants to blend his
two interests into one with no differences. He manages a web portal for
Filipino artists.
Ferraris, a native of Iloilo City and a 7-year resident of Hong Kong, is
famous for his murals that are often used by the Hong Kong government,
especially the Hong Kong Mural Society. He calls his exhibit at the
Consulate “Digital Dreams”.
Segismundo, from Manila and a 17-year resident of Hong Kong, is currently
an art lecturer for Caritas Bianchi College of Careers in Hong Kong. He
has been a creative manager, creative director, and art director for
international newspapers and magazines.
