Advisory on Illegal Recruitment
24 May 2005
The Philippine Consulate
General in Hong Kong wishes to advise all Filipinos in Hong Kong and in
Macau on a recent scam being perpetrated in China regarding the illegal
recruitment of teachers.
The Consulate received a
report from the Philippine Embassy in Beijing regarding an illegal
recruitment scam involving the hiring of teachers to work in China. The
scam involves certain individuals in Beijing who have been accused by
various members of the Filipino community of having recruited Filipino
teachers for nonexistent teaching jobs in China. The teachers are then
forced to pay extra for the conversion of their visas from tourist to
business. At present, many of these Filipinos have yet to find jobs and
are subsisting on the kindness of Beijing based Filipinos.
When reports to Embassies
or Consulates are confirmed, passports of illegal recruiters are cancelled
and the person’s names are submitted to Immigration’s look out list.
The Consulate wishes to
advise Filipino nationals in Hong Kong to exercise caution on such
spurious job opportunities in China. All Filipino nationals wishing to
seek employment abroad are reminded to first consult the nearest
Philippine Overseas Employment Administration Office (POEA) in their
vicinity in order to obtain accurate information on the application
process for securing overseas employment.
Filipinos currently employed in HK are also likewise requested to advise
their relatives or friends in the Philippines to first inquire from the
POEA before making any decision to accept job offers to work in China.
