Boracay Fresh Sets Record, Enters Semifinals As Top
Seed
10 June 2005
Boracay Fresh, showing awesome
offense and paralyzing defense, set a landmark record in the Filipino
community’s sports history on 5 June at the Palaro ng Konsulado men’s
basketball tournament, registering a clean sweep of the elimination round.
Boracay completed
an 8-0 win-loss record by overpowering Takuza, 108-89, thanks mainly to
Renchie Enriquez, the heart and soul of the team, who scored 23 points in
another dominating performance.
Boracay’s perfect record was a first in the history of basketball
tournaments in the Filipino community.
``It's a first. It’s a record,” said Jun Andrada, commissioner of
the tournament.
Another record was set on the same playing day when Lahing
Kayumanggi playmaker Alvin “The Flying A” Arceo scored 59 points – the
most points scored by a player in any Filipino basketball tournament in
years – in a no-relief , 40-minute performance against Budget Finance. But
Arceo’s one-man show failed to lift his team to victory as they lost to
Budget Finance, 107-146.
Meanwhile, the cross-over semifinals will be held on 19 June at the
Lockhart Road Playground in Wanchai with Boracay Fresh as top seed. It
will compete against No. 4 seed MIGA for a slot in the championship game
on 26 June. The other championship spot will be disputed between No. 2
seed Solid First and No. 3 seed Budget Finance. The champion of the group
(Class A) will receive the Secretary of Foreign Affairs Cup.
Class B, grouping the teams that placed
fifth to eight in the
elimination round, will compete for the Philippine Consulate General Cup.
The semifinal pairings will see the PCG Blue Boys, seeded No. 5, battling
Lahing Kayumanggi, seeded No. 8, for a place in the PCG Cup championship
game. The other semifinal game pairs No. 6 seed PARDS against No. 7 seed
Kabalen.
Another sidelight of the tournament, organized by the Consulate and the
Philippine Guardians Brotherhood, Inc. – HK chapter, will be the finals of
three-point shootout competition at halftime of the championship game on
26 June. Two representatives each from all teams will vie for the four
finals slots.
