FILIPINO CIVIC LEADER HONG KONG TO RECEIVE 2004 PRESIDENTIAL AWARD

15 December 2004, Hong Kong - A respected Filipino civic leader in Hong Kong will be conferred the 2004 Presidential
Award (Banaag Award, individual category) for her efforts in providing assistance to Filipino workers in Hong Kong.
President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo will confer the award in ceremonies at the Malacaņang Palace today.
The Banaag Award is conferred on Filipino and foreign individuals of organizations for their contributions which
have significantly benefited a sector or community in the Philippines, or advanced the cause of overseas Filipiono
communities.
Mrs. Lourdes Apostol Salazar, 49, is being recognized for her efforts in providing cultural, livelihood, sports and
skills-upgrading programs to Filipino workers and for her work with the Hong Kong government in promotin racial harmony
in Hong Kong.
Among her significant contributions to the Filipino community in Hong Kong this year was her active involvement in the
successful implementation of the Overseas Absentee Voting (OAV) as a trustee and adviser on special projects of the
Bayanihan Centre, venue for the voting and counting of ballots.
A banker and lawyer, Mrs. Salazar is also the Executive Director of the Philippine Chamber of Commerce - HOng Kong,
Treasurer of the Promotion of Philippines Arts, Culture and Education Society (PACES), and former Chair of the
Philippine Association of Hong Kong.
She was the prime mover of an annula project support by the Home Affairs Bureau of HK called "Harmony in Cultures"
which aim to establish good cultural relationship among the ethnic minorities in HK.
Mrs. Salazar has a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of the East and Bachelor of Science in Commerce, major
in Accounting, from the University of the Santo Tomas. She is married to Atty. Randolph C. Salazar. They have three
children.
"The conferment of the prestigious Banaag Award to Mrs. Salazar will further bring honor to the more than 120,000-strong
Filipino community in HKSAR," Consul General Corazon L. Belmonte-jover said.
